Fort Edmonton

We decided to take a bit of an impulse-trip to Edmonton, staying overnight in a hotel and visiting the Edmonton Temple. Friday evening's planned activity was swimming in the hotel pool, but we visited the Fort Edmonton historical park until the 4:00 pm check-in time. Over the course of the last 30 years they have completely rebuilt the fort to look authentic and it is very impressive. Various streets in the park represent different periods in Edmonton's early history, going back as far as 1885.

In trying to explain how old the buildings were, I told Scott they were older than any people that he knows. I asked him, "Who is the oldest person you know?" I thought he might think of his great grandparents. He said, "Jesus."

Well, these buildings aren't quite THAT old.

We got to ride a vintage streetcar through one section of the park. The recent custom has been to let Scott take the point-and-shoot camera and get pictures of the things that interest him:

Scott's Perpective on the War Museum

R went out for lunch one Saturday, so I decided to take the kids to the Military Museum. Every time we take a trip down to the US we point out the dramatically-posed CF-5 Fighter near Crowchild Trail and comment on how interesting it would be to go visit the museum.

Aside from one frightening incident with the alarm system, we had a fabulous time. Even after I had been warned, I accidentally pointed too close to one of the displays and deafening alarms went off all around us. Katie had been doing pretty well up until that point, but she was a bit anxious for the rest of the trip. Scott reminded me every few minutes not to point at anything.

Scott brought along our compact camera and had fun taking pictures of whatever interested him. He really liked the miniature models of various warships. He also took a photo of a movie we were watching about jets. I omitted the close-up picture he took of Katie's (clothed) rear end.

Wetting One's Self at the San Diego Zoo

In the afternoon we caught up with my cousins at the San Diego Zoo. We found them at the Seal Show, where we took advantage of their VIP tickets to sit in a prime location. The three boys took advantage of the time to run up and down all the metal benches. I love how each boy's outfit seems to scream out a different theme (skater, GI Joe and REI).

While we were waiting for the seal show to start, I let Scotty take some more photos. He keeps his finger out of the way and he manages to hold it level, so he does better than I might have expected.

D: "Scott, did you like riding up high above the zoo in that green cable car?"
S: "It didn't have wheels, so it wasn't a car."
D: "You're right. It was more like a bucket."
S: "Yeah, a green bucket."

Scott was pretty excited about the whole experience and forgot to tell us that he needed to go to the bathroom until it was too late -- and I was holding him. Suddenly I found my hoodie was all wet. We were on the opposite side of the zoo (headed into the elephant exhibit), so I had to take the cable car back and then run to our car to get something for him and I to change into. I bought a green tote bag from the gift shop as well as a plastic bag and we wrapped up the wet clothes for the rest of the visit. That tote bag is our only souvenir from San Diego.

For the record, Scott wasn't the only one to wet himself that day at the zoo. One more of the individuals in this final picture wet himself. The other one will remain nameless, but I can tell you it wasn't the sea lion.

Sam's Wedding at the San Diego Temple

[From Dec 31, 2010]

Sam and Jennika got married on a beautiful, sunny morning at the San Diego Temple and everything about it was so perfect. Essentially, anywhere you decided to point your camera was a legimate subject for a photograph. Scott demonstrated this point quite literally by shooting off about 100 photos while we were on the temple grounds. I have combined some of his best shots into a collage.

In addition to those that he took, we took a few, and we posed for a good family shot. The colours there were so vibrant (especially compared to Calgary in December).

And of course, we did manage to snap one or two with the bride and groom in them. Beautiful day. Beautiful couple. Everything was beautiful.

Fall Photoshoot (By Scott)

With most of the leaves changing colour, we decided to get out and take some pictures at our place and at the ravine near R's parents' place. However, before I could take very many of Scott, he insisted in trying out the camera:
