Credit Card Protests at U of C

This morning I was studying in the MBA lounge here at the University of Calgary and suddenly I heard a loud rumbling. As it turns out, right next door to us there is a meeting of the University Board of Governors this morning to review a decision to discontinue the use of credit cards as a method for tuition payment, and a group of students decided to rally a protest. Campus security is standing by, but it is certainly distracting to have such a ruckus going on just down the hall.

There's a guy on a bullhorn leading the chant and a lot of people are banging garbage cans, but I'm still waiting for them to break into "Do You Hear the People Sing?" from Les Miserables.

You on the barricades listen to this...

Why does the university want to stop the payments with credit cards--does it cost them quite a bit to participate with the cards?

What was the outcome of the meeting?

They are trying to claw back the transaction fee charged by the credit card companies, which adds up to nearly $1 million each year. They are still going ahead with it, I think, but they are adding a few programs to help people who are adversely affected.

From what I can tell, most of my classmates are mad that they'll miss out on reward miles and stuff -- it's not a major financial hardship.

I think they should take their protests to the offices of the credit card companies for the exhorbitant way they can change their interest rates and terms of their programs without notice.

Well, if they don't have that reason to protest they might think up another one. It seems that way here at home! Too bad!!

Sooo...you actually had your camcorder/camera handy with you while studying on campus for an exam?

Camera phone. That's why it's so fuzzy.

Impressive entries, D. Is it possible to pay tuition without a credit card? I didn't think anything was possible without plastic.

You guys seem to have been getting a lot of snow. I had forgotten about that stuff.
