Day 6: Kalispell Woodland Park

More driving? Yes please.

Our wagon train headed further north to Kalispell, Montana, to spend a few days with our kinfolk who live there in the Flathead Valley. I absolutely love that part of the country. I also love Montana highways. Even tiny little two-lane roads had a 70 mph speed limit. We made good time to our rendezvous point, a cute little bungalow on the west side of town that we had rented. Then we headed out to Woodland Park to enjoy the playground equipment, feed the ducks, and rub shoulders with Kalispell's upper crust.

Day 5: Pokey

After a strong initial run in Utah County, our family reunion went on tour for the next few days, beginning with Pocatello, Idaho. We encountered a family of moose (mother and two new calves) just before pulling up the alpine driveway to my parents' cabin in the hills, and then were mesmerized by the constant flow of hummingbirds to the pair of feeders on the deck. They were not shy about buzzing right past your head as you stood there watching.

I hijacked my mom's convertible when we all went out to play mini golf for the evening. The kids were really excited about getting into the car, but once we got going down the road they started suggesting that it was too windy for their liking. Too bad, kids. This roof is staying down.

The mini golf was kind of the same way. Katie was really excited to get her pink putter and ball, but once she got on the course she broke down a bit emotionally. Maybe she was just a bit tired from all the driving. Maybe she puts too much pressure on herself to perform at a high level. I'm going to guess that she was tired.

Great Grandma W came out to the house for a visit, which was a pleasure. I have wanted to get the kids out to see her house, but the short nature of our visit didn't allow enough time. Next visit, for sure. Everyone should get the chance to visit Grandma's house.

Day 4: Highland Manor

Although we did get away to the splash park in the morning, mostly we just lazed away our final day together in the comfort of J&J's house, which is so fantastic that it should be considered referred to as the "Manor House" and the back yard referred to as "the grounds." The kids loved the sandbox and hardly did anything all afternoon and evening but work on a massive building project. Katie and Ava became inseparable as they played and giggled together. Such cute little girls.

Aunica and Emily capped off the meal with an experimental dessert of ice cream in homemade milk chocolate bowls, and then uncle Joke converted one corner of the grounds into an outdoor theatre for a viewing of Cars2 -- we had to watch the final few minutes under the protection of a patio umbrella, but that just added to the experience, I think.

A fabulous time spent at Highland Manor. So much fun. So many games of Ticket to Ride.

Day 3: Spray Park

It was really hot outside, we spent a morning at the spray park in Alpine. I just couldn't get over the scenery. Sure, we have mountains near Calgary, and they may be taller than those of the Wasatch Front, but our mountains are back on the horizon. These mountains are right in town! It was a beautiful day for kids to splash in the water. Katie and Ava played together a bit, which was fun to see.

The bigger kids opted for a game of soccer, despite the oppressive heat. Scott enjoyed playing goalie some of the time. He just can't wait to be big enough to compete with everyone else.

Day 2: Sunday in Highland

Sunday was the first day that we were all gathered in Highland. Grandma and Grandpa came down from Pocatello for the day and the NYC-TJA crew joined us in time for church. It was super-hot outside but was still a perfect day to relax in the yard with Ticket to ride or retreat to the cool of the air-conditioned indoors for Wii (Scott's favourite) or maybe even some ping pong. Scott could not get enough of video games and he worked his way through each of his cousins, who were very patient with his demands.

Day 1: Bear Poops & Soggy Fireworks

We came back to Highland from Provo in time to go see the local fireworks show (celebrating Pioneer Day). Scotty got to stay up late for the show, but Katie had a quick snack and was headed to bed.

Uncle Joke got her giggling hysterically when he asked if her Bear Paw snack (which she pronounces "Bear Pop") was called a Bear Poop. The giggles must have gone on for five minutes straight.

Once R had carted Katie off to bed for the night, the rest of us piled into the Suburban to find good viewing spot where the road passes by a large city park. We cranked open the sunroof and set up a vantage point from atop the roof.

The fireworks show got even better when one of the cars several spots down from us suddenly got soaked by a sprinkler that came on. We laughed at their misfortune as they scrambled for cover. We commented among ourselvs there was no way that sprinkler could be so poorly calibrated that it would rotate all the way around to hit us, since that would mean it was pretty much shooting straight out into the street. We continued to sit on the roof of the Suburban, waiting for it to stop rotating. But it never did. When it hit, I quickly pushed Scotty down through the sunroof before the spray caught me dead on. Completely soaked.

We watched the rest of the show from inside the car, occasionally turning on the windshield wipers.

Day 1: Dinner

R's grandparents live in Provo and they were kind enough to take us all out to dinner at their favourite haunt -- the Olive Garden. I wish I had snapped more than one photo of them, since Grandma's eyes were closed in the one I got. Oh well.

It was nice to see Brad and get to know Katie a bit more. They had to hurry off back to SLC to catch the evening show of Wicked, but we still had time for Brad to play some quality games of Barrel of Monkeys, which Scott had just acquired with his big ticket jackpot.

Love this shot of Grandpa. The one I got of Grandma she is covering her face with both her hands, so I guess it wasn't her day for photographs.

After dinner we said goodbye to Brad and Katie and went back to Grandpa and Grandpa's house for some Wii Sports and a few games of pool (Grandpa wiped the floor with me in pool). Scott was initiated in the long tradition of Grandma's Candy Jar. Lots of fun. Hope we can go back and visit soon.

Vacation Day 1: Boondocks

Our 10-day summer road trip took us to Utah, Idaho and Montana. Technically, the first day was actually a 15-hour driving day from Calgary to Highland, but other than an emergency stop near Lima, Montana to avert a puking incident, the day was uneventful and not particularly noteworthy. So we will start with our first full day in Utah, where we met up with R's brother B and his girlfriend K for lunch and some games at the Boondocks fun center in Draper.

We kicked it off on the go-cart track, where Katie rode with Mom and Scott rode with Dad. I feel bad for Scott, because I think he had the fattest driver and we seemed to lag behind the other cars. He seemed to like it though.

We retreated from the oppressive heat of the outdoor track to the cool glow of the arcade games. Scott was in heaven playing all the games while Katie tried out the toddler climbing area. Since she hadn't had a nap, she struggled with the climbing area, faring better at the kiddie arcades.

We blew tons of tokens on silly games to win tickets. Right near the end, Scott hit the jackpot on the Price-is-Right styled spinner and won 250 tickets in one shot. It takes a long time for 250 tickets to come out of a machine.

We cashed in our hard-won tickets for some really cheap toys. Scott finally got the whoopee cushion he's wanted since he saw a friend get one at a birthday party.
