The 'A' List

Wow.

I have never been to a baby shower, but now I think I know what it's like. As I understand it, a bunch of friends (mostly experienced moms) come together and shower you with things that they think will help you take care of your new baby. This is better than muddling around in the aisles of Babies R Us, trying to assess the advantages of the Diaper Genie over the competition. At a baby shower, these experienced moms are going to give you the stuff that works -- the stuff they like.

Today, my cousin A-Squared threw an impromptu virtual baby shower for us on her blog, providing her list of favourite baby items, with descriptions and pictures. To feel the full effect of the shower experience, you have to read her posting but I'm going to retain a summary list here for our benefit:

ITEMS
  • The Boppy 5-in-1
  • Graco Pack-n-play
  • Swing
  • Container for dishwasher
  • Formula dispenser
  • Cloth diapers as burp cloths
  • Munchkin wipe warmer
  • Binky clip
  • Bundleme
  • Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bag
  • Diaper Dekor Plus
  • KidCo Food grinder

ADVICE
  • Pampers: diaper of choice
  • virtues of cold cabbage leaves
  • Diaper strategies
  • Benefits of Helper-Mom

A-Squared, thanks for the posting! Consider this my new wish-list.

We have some good friends whose opinion we trust. They are good sober minded, practical people. She is also an experienced mom. She said that hands down, by far, her most valued baby accessory was an electric wet wipe warmer that hangs on the side of the crib. It was geeaaarbbiigge. Not poor quality or anything, just useless. Konrad never seemed to care if the thing was warm or cool (maybe he just wanted to get clean quick!).

We used it like....once. Its still in the closet. oooooooh! Never mind what I just wrote. I know what I'm going to give you for a baby shower. Its definitely a must have!

Excellent advice, A! I'm going to order a food grinder for my little guy right now! D, you need to register this list somehow so the gift-givers in your life know which ones are already covered. I haven't used everything on the list, but the Pack n' Play, swing, dishwasher basket, and Mom's help (for as long as you can possibly get it)are definitely indispensable.

Way to go, A-Squared ! Such good ideas. I have never been to a virtual baby shower, but I had a good time. I love a baby shower wehre we don't have to play those cutesy games.

I can't believe how things have changed since your were a baby, D. Pampers was the only disposable diaper around and we could not afford them, so it was good ole cloth diapers for you. My mom came and helped me for a week or two after each baby was born and I loved it. Her only request each time was that I figure out how to fold the diapers to fit a new baby before she got there. This was also the days before pre-folded cloth diapers--sounds like you were born in horse and buggy days, doesn't it D !

I have absolutely loved being able to help out when some of my grandchildren were born. Those have been such great times !!!!

Call me sadistic or cold hearted or whatever but I found it funny using cold wipes on H when I changed him. He is like me in that cold on those man parts takes his breath away. It doesn’t seem to work any more but I would always get a chuckle when I wiped him and he is trying to catch his breath. He He He… still makes me laugh.

D,
I do appreciate the response. I'm ok with the haunting, as long as I get to chuckle now and again today.
