Wedding Luncheon

I have three words for you: Puppet. Flash. Mob.

During the wedding luncheon there was a small program. I was the MC and there were some very touching words from the bride's brother, as well as a beautiful song from the bride's sister-in-law. After Brad's sister and brother shared some equally touching thoughts about Brad, I returned to the microphone with my hand tucked into my suit jacket like Napoleon to say:

"Now is the point in the program where we will have the lovely couple come up and sing a duet. Cue the music please."

All eyes turned to the bride and groom as the sound system began to play the opening bars of a music track, but they did not move from their seats. Instead, I pulled my arm from my jacket to reveal a knight-in-shining-armour puppet to start singing "Life is a Happy Song", the opening number from the 2011 movie "The Muppets." Everyone in attendence looked on in shock as R ran up to the microphone with her matching princess puppet to take lines 3 and 4 of the opening chorus.

We sang the song with gusto, using the little puppeteer wands to add gestures to match the lyrics (which is more challenging than you think). When we reached the second half of the song, where is sort of a call-and-response aspect of the song, our brother-in-law Luke suddenly popped up from his table with his own custom sock puppet to sing a line. Another family member popped up with a sock puppet for each successive call-out line, until 15 of the grooms family (including a three 2-year-olds and the groom's parents) were gathered around the head table belting out the finale. As suddenly as it had began, the music stopped and we returned to our seats.

I think the bride and groom liked it. I know for a fact that our kids did. I heard somebody captured most of it on video. For most of us, our hands were too occupied to operate a camera. I would like to see that video sometime.
