Sleep Is Golden

Little Scott slept away most of his first day on earth. Then he stayed up most of the night -- perhaps to make up for lost time. I slept through neither. The first day, I was too giddy to waste time sleeping when I could be cooing over my wrinkly little progeny. Then when he started to fuss late that first evening, I quickly volunteered to take him out and walk the hallways for about two hours. He seemed to like it out there pretty well, but he refused to fall asleep. I finally tried bringing him back in the room, but he kept us awake for hours with his moody chirping -- sounding a short cry every 5 minutes with remarkable consistency.

Finally, at about 4:00am, we called for backup and the nurses took him back into the hall, whereupon he promptly fell asleep until 9:00am. I was disappointed that I hadn't been able to make him the absolute "Happiest Baby On the Block", but I was very happy to finally get some sleep. I had been up for nearly 48 hours straight.

I don't think I've ever been so delirious from sleep deprivation in my life.

Now I can make a comment. Ah the sleep deprivation, yes I do remember it but of course J remembers it much better. The first week with H was fun because he was born at a similar time frame as Scott and we spent a good week or more just trying to catch up. What is it with the day sleepers! Every kid born in my family since and including H has been a day sleeper and a night owl. Frustrating and difficult to correct.

Luke, that is because I was being a good kid and got my 50 names extracted BEFORE goint to the blog that I knew would be there. Then Cathy called and talked for over a half hour or perhaps I would have beat you!
Derek, welcome to fatherhood, and it looks like you are enjoying it no end. We know why and we are grateful, too, that you now have your son!! Now, be good to Helen as she will be your "back-up" for a while. And in the meantime I'll have Jenny here for a few days so she can catch up on her sleep!!
P. S. I'm getting better at reading your word verifications after deciphering the writing on the genealogy sheets!

Congrats! This is indeed a time for grand announcements. While it's important to note the sale of your house and the addition of little Scott, I can't believe you guys finally revealed your identities! It's great to see your lovely faces, and that of little Scott. What a dear. He actually made me ooooh and ahhhh. I'm getting soft. Congratulations once again. Love you guys.

lvgfmmyWell done team Wride. your trip through the chronology was nostalgic. Even the eerie mind trips of sleep deprivation all play part in the good memories of that great day. D I think we are close enough you might ask me for a favour if you really needed it. But let me offer in case you just kinda need it. Jenn or I can come over with a phone call so you or R can rest if its needed or whatever. Let me know if you havn't been overloaded with meals etc.

I love these pictures! So, is this any more real to you, D, now that you've walked the hallways for hours with your sweet baby boy? Mine is nine months old and I still find myself just gazing in utter delight at his cute face. These babies are spell-binding!

Congrats!!! I'm so very happy to hear about Scott's arrival. Sleep deprivation. Well, take advantage of whatever sleep you can muster while you have help because Scott might be one of those babies that ... are awake a lot. BUT you might be blessed with a baby that will sleep well. I wish the latter for you.
Let us know when Rachelle is ready to have visitors.
YAY!!!

When I finally had the chance to catch up on sleep lost at the hospital, I was so giddy that I practically couldn't. I had to upload pictures and call people and such. I basically crashed week 3 or 4. Can't wait to read more. Keep it coming!

Congrats guy! I'm stoked that everything turned out alright. Sleep IS golden! It's too bad you missed our Y2K 72 hour party. We got so tired in the end that we didn't even find Mr. Bean to be funny.
